There’s plenty going on in Tignes this winter so if you’re planning a trip and trying to decide when to visit, take a look at what is on to see if there is anything that takes your fancy!
The first major event of the winter is Les Etoiles Du Sport from 13th to 18th December. This is a multi-discipline event for teams made up of up and coming athletes and established Olympic stars. The public can’t compete but there’s plenty of opportunities to watch the competition and possibly even see a future global sporting star in action!
From 6th to 8th February the Ride The Snake snowboarding competition will be taking place in the Palet Sector of Tignes. This isn’t your typical freestyle competition – instead of riders competing to do the biggest tricks it’s all about style. Over three days of festivities and competition riders will compete to find the most creative and stylish line on the “Snake” course – made up of twenty large and imaginatively sculpted modules.
There is an amateur contest as well as a two day filming contest that will see twenty professional snowboarders compete for the prize.
At the end of the competition “The Snake” will be opened to the public so everyone can have the opportunity to match the pros!
Tignes is synonymous with freestyle and this year freestyle will be front and centre for the Freestyle Week from 5th to 12th March.
There will be plenty of activities to get involved in, including skiing and snowboarding on a hike park that will be specially built for the occasion, skateboarding, BMX and scooter riding on an indoor skate park that will be specially built in the Tignespace in the centre of town, demos by professional riders, parties, concerts and finally at the end of the week, the climax to the event – the final of the Slopestyle World Cup on Saturday 12th March! This event is guaranteed to be huge and is not to be missed!
Immediately following the Freestyle Week, European Snow Pride will take place from 12th March to 19th March. Since 2008 Tignes has hosted the biggest LGBT ski week in Europe and there will be plenty of parties throughout the week!
It’s looking as though the start of March is going to be an incredibly busy time to be in Tignes as the Tignes Film Awards is also scheduled to take place between 1st and 12th March.
The Tignes Film Awards is a film competition that is open to anyone. The only rules are that all filming must take place during the filming week (from 1st to 8th March – flags are provided that have to be displayed in every shot), films can’t be more than five minutes long and filming has to take place in the Espace Killy ski area. Other than that the only limit is the team’s imagination! So if you have ever fancied yourself as a budding Steven Spielberg or Warren Miller then now is your chance to make your dream a reality! If you don’t want to make a film yourself then you can still enjoy the event by grabbing a ticket for the premiere night on 12th March. The first edition of the event was one of the biggest parties of the season, so dress to impress, buy a ticket and don’t miss out!
Coming toward the end of the winter, there’s still lots going on! On 29th and 30th April and 1st May the 29th edition of the Black Shoes telemark festival will take place, with contests in the park, a race for children and the opportunity to try out telemarking if you’ve always wondered what it’s all about. So free the heel and free the mind and get involved!
